The Tiananmen Square protests were student-led demonstrations calling for democracy, free speech and a free press in China. They were halted in a bloody crackdown, known as the Tiananmen Square.

Both the publisher and the author, in the prologue, claim that the book focuses on the "thugs" who participated in the Tiananmen Square protests - "thugs" being the Chinese government's word for non-student protesters. The first part of the book, called "Beijing," deals with these stories, but it is only of the book's pages/5(12).

As for Tiananmen, the grass-roots historian Liao Yiwu has just published in English a book of interviews, “Bullets and Opium: Real-Life Stories of China After the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Named after the Tiananmen gate, one that means the “Gate of Heavenly Peace,” the square is located towards the north of the gate, separating it from the Forbidden City.

Considered the fourth largest city square in the world, its dimensions aresquare meters/5(8). After 25 Years Of Amnesia, Remembering A Forgotten Tiananmen The bloody crackdown in Beijing changed China, NPR's Louisa Lim explains in a new book.

She also chronicles the brutal repression. Francesca Annicchiarico During the Tiananmen Square protests, Chinese activists, made up mostly of university students, occupied Beijing’s large city center, demanding democratic reforms and recognition of their civic rights.

The demonstrations were sparked by the death of a progressive reformer, whose public mourning in Tiananmen Square shortly turned into protests across China.

After his death in April students gathered in Tiananmen Square to mourn the loss of a respected leader. What began as a profound expression of sorrow, however, would soon develop into the massive pro-democracy demonstration that occupied Tiananmen Square. Liao Yiwu is a writer, musician, and poet from Sichaun, China.

He is the author of The Corpse Walker, God Is Red, and For a Song and a Hundred Songs, a memoir of the four years he spent in prison after the Tiananmen Square work has been published in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and : Atria/One Signal Publishers.
